(Rhode Island) Perhaps best known for his award-winning design work for Sub Pop and Suicide Squeeze records and his poster art (Patent Pending Industries with Jeff Kleinsmith), Jesse's fine art has been seen roaming the free range of magazines like Beautiful Decay and toys companies like Kid Robot (a whole line of figures to be released November '06) as of late. Having relocated to Providence, RI, LeDoux has buckled himself into the proverbial rollercoaster of freelancing yet is reaping the benefits of gambling away his Seattle security blanket. One of the nicest and most down-to-earth dudes on the planet, EXT.STG. is more than happy to host his linework on the cover of issue two. ledouxville.com
(SF Bay Area) Atta weighs in at 257 pounds, from Green... Bay... WIS-CON-SIN... no, wait, that's Mr. Kennedy. Atta is actually quite a bit thinner and perpetuating both his ghoulie goodness and toy magazine Hi Fructose out of Albany, CA (really very fitting that its right between the Berkeley weird and the Richmond scary). Both sinister and silly (sillister?), Atta's work is playful and graphic, yet painterly and chaotic. yumfactory.com
(Portland OR) Former full-time pow schralpfer turned Gnu-graphics nerd and off-piste paintlord, Tim's gaining rep in a quickstyle fashion for his multi-layered installations. Beyond sick... Tim gleams mad gnar.
(Spain) Emil is Spain's best-kept Dane. Calling skate-mecca Barcelona home, Kozak throws down in a number of 'genres' from deck graphics and t-shirts to housewares (Watch for his curtains in "Beware The 'Ware"... ha ha). Kozak makes most designers want to throw up their hands in concession. Imagine, if you will, the last ten minutes of Eight Mile; only Eminem is EmilKay and the other dude is every other bitch-ass with a Mac and a screenpress that's ever walked the planet. emilkozak.com
(Connecticut) Last year's bio read: "Chris is popping up all over this year, with appearances in New York magazine, the New York Times, Clear, Faesthetic, Sherbert, Law of Inertia, and Best Life magazines as well as the Output 7 and Jeremyville's Sketchel book. Chris was recently nominated STEP magazine's Top Emerging Talents in 2005." Yeah, dude's still killing it and ever-closer to getting the hell out of the grad program at Yale. I cant even begin to imagine what this guy wil be capable of once he gets some free time... shee-it. Gluekit.com
(Toledo OH) If it weren't for his high level of success and better attitude, I'd swear Dustin was a bizarro/Ohioanese replicant of myself. Although his Faesthetic magazine is technically one of EXT.STG.'s only direct competitors, UPSO's always been down with the love and support. upso.org // faesthetic.com
(SF/Maryland) Bill was recommended to me by a friend at my RX opening last July. His art's been seen in much more recognized places than here, most prominently Juxtapoz, and I'm honored to have him gracing these lowly pages.
(NYC) Ryan's "Meanies" design for The Quiet Life is one of the coolest t-shirts, like, ever. Check out thingmaking.com for a glance into Ryan's genius.
(Seal Beach CA) P. makes creepy crawly, greasy, grimey gopher guts look charming in a way that makes you think he's got a contraption that can juice post-German-Expressionism with equal parts Ren & Stimpy. pwilliamsart.com
(Berlin) An art director and illustrator, Marie is especially interested in creating strong, picture-based worlds through her work in motion graphics, exhibition design, and illustration. Based in Berlin but working in Munich and Cologne, her work has been published in NEON (Germany), INDIE (Austria), and PIG (Italy), as well as Destructed, Kuenstlichst, and Whaleless She'll be the featured artist in SENSORAMA show, starting this November 2006 in Freiburg, Germany, but also going to Switzerland and France.
(Brooklyn) Best known for his album art for No Idea and other punk and emo labels, Steak Mtn. makes the freeform illustration thing look like somebody gives a shit, whithout giving a shit, since that's so, hella, like, not punk. steakmtn.com
(Sacramento) JB may be a local institution in Sacramento, but he's earned his stripes all over the country. From curating the Run Like Hell group show at Lo-Fi Customs in SF last June, to participating in the Uplifting Vengeance ho-down at RX, to getting up in the Collabroation tour and book, JB is as legit as they comes... only rivaled by his own humility and good nature. johnstuartberger.com
(Sacramento) Local legend, current-lover/former-fighter, The Skinn Dogg managed to not only maintain his art career while building his own house (!!!) this year, but step to the next, showing with Bigfoot in SF, installing no-holds/walls-barred mural projects at Big Brother Comics and Java Lounge, curating the Uplifting Vengeance group show at RX Gallery and working with Jedidiah on some t-shirt designs. Time will only tell how far dude will go in '07 with his house and massive studio up and running and his band Iguanadon's first CD ready to roll. TheArtOfSkinner.com
(Los Angeles) Mike came on the radar at the No Stress show a number of EXT.STG. contributors took part in at Voice 1156 (San Diego) in August 2005. A good sport and a helluva nice guy in addition to his considerable art steeze, Mike's gone from running his own gallery to showing at Kinsey Desforges in the course of a year. Happy accidents anyone? mikestilkey.com
(San Francisco) I first met Scott at APE-Con last year because he was one of the only ones doing the shit that I can really appreciate: graphic, bold, clean yet bizarre. He had these all-over icon prints that looked like something McFetridge would do yet without the slightest hint of "bite" to them. Not easy to do. When you put that in a setting where almost everything else is scribbled diary comix, he seems even more like Andy Warhol in a pre-school. Anyway, duder's way chill and reminds me a little of the guy from The Greatest American Hero and his art continues to blow me away. sacredmtn.com
(Sacramento) Chedda gets banked in '07.
(Sacramento) Aaron Winters is the graphic designer, illustrator, fine artist and musician behind AVMJ and Exit Strategy. His art direction for THELEGEND magazine, Weird Forest and Claire's Echo record labels notwithstanding, Aaron has had a marathon 2006. After showing in Sacramento, San Francisco and the UK, lecturing and curating at UC Davis, getting up in Semi-Permanent'06, Faesthetic 6, Anti- 1, and more, publishing Exit Strategy again this year is just icing on the cake. (Sacramento) I met Jared last year at the morbidly underattended EXT.STG.01 release party at The Toyroom. He was one of the first in the door and was really excited. He asked me later if he could be in 02 and I told him no, but that if he stepped it up I'd think about it. About three months later JK came through with some dope steeze. Definitely earned his spot.
(LA) Despite being the total life of the party, Adam's remained an outsider among outsiders as far as his art goes. Never afraid to throw himself on the tracks with shows where the art is best measured by the cubic yard or by its meticulous assembly, whether the medium be plywood or cupie dolls, Adam was doing some of the most unique stuff on the Sacramento scene. Now in the grad program at Art Center, who knows what monster cocktail dude will whip up. adamlovespuppies.com
(UK) Craig is your average mild-mannered Brtish gentleman and grad student that has a finger in everything from publishing to curating in addition to his true passion of illustration. Jay Howell connected us a few years back after Negatron came out, and Craig has been so polite as to stay in contact and even host me in his Post It-Post It show in the summer or 2006. craigatkinson.co.uk
(Israel) Best known for his insane digital collages and club flyer design in his home of Jerusalem, Rotem turned in a submission I didnt expect to see. Check him out at www.rotemnir.com and then see his pages and go, "Huh.... dope" like I did.
(Netherlands) Gina is a sweetheart, and the first European to ever order a magazine from me — even though I wouldve probably sent her one for free. While known for her incredible renderings of sneakers, she has some cute little characters that make the Powerpuffs look like crusty old mopwimmens. georginavieane.blog.com
(Los Angeles) Timid and demure in person, if you read an email or blog you'll see Grace is one of the smartest and funniest ladies you'll ever meet. She's talented too, working to really elevate the whole 'vector-artist' thing to the next, which sorely, sorely needs to be done.
(UK) Ella was found on the Confused UK artist database one particularly bored day last spring. Nice stuff, go check it out. Go say hi.
(Sacramento) It's amazing to me that for a town the size of Sacramento, with the circle of friends we share, and as nice as a guy that Richard is, I had yet to meet him in person before working on this magazine. Rad, obscure techniques and abilities abound, just dont let him near your scanner... you'll find it huddled in the corner rocking slowly and mumbling about Antietam.
Patrick is maybe best known for his work with Craig Metzger's Instant Winner skateboard company. Mad sinews, yo... Pat single-handedly inspired most of my pieces in the RX Gallery show last summer. Dude squeaked in just weeks PAST the deadline... ha ha, just bustin' your balls, bruh... but well worth the wait. The kind of artist that makes you feel like whatever you do is about as worthwhile as a bowl of soup spilled on the sidewalk that even a dog wouldn't lap up. theholster.com
(Scotland) Like Ella K. above, I found Ms. Stubbs in the Confused UK talent pool. She's just getting started and'll be out of art school before you know it. Active in the Glaswegian (???) art community, I expect you'll be hearing more of her very soon.
(Sacramento) Professor Herrera, Octogonycologist and his fair lady Ashley have been collaborating since before I met them, and I think that's like, probably been, like, totally, ferdays, n'shit by now. Using digital tech-steeze to create analog-esque effects THE RIGHT WAY is fuckin' hard, this is no 'bro with Photoshop-Liquify filter' crap. Their work is as real as virtual gets.
(Chicago) Donnie: Insanely talented multimedia pimp daddy. Angel: Multifaceted 24-carat Jem meets all the Holograms and then puts them to work 24-7. Chicago's dynamic duo, their myriad apprearances in the art press alongside their own Carpal Tunnel magazine (RIP), shows the dedication they rep and the dedicated rep they're building. www.mydbmedia.com, angeldamico.com
